Sfakia Sky is a truly unique competition in Crete, standing alone in its exceptional scale across Greece and Europe. This event offers an unparalleled opportunity to traverse the mountainous, almost lunar landscape nestled within the heart of the White Mountains, locally referred to as Madara. With more than 55 peaks towering above 2,000 meters, participants can soak in the breathtaking panorama.
Embarking on this journey, you’ll venture through the remote Katsiveli plateau, situated at an elevation of 2,000 meters, and pass by traditional stone-made mitata – small houses where local breeders continue the age-old practice of crafting traditional cheese. The relentless ascent commences from sea level at Loutro Sfakion, covering 20 kilometers and boasting an impressive 2,600 meters of positive altitude. Ultimately, your endeavor culminates at the highest pinnacle of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains), Pachnes, which stands tall at 2,453 meters above sea level.
Upon summiting Pachnes, the return journey leads back to Anopoli Sfakion, offering a total distance of 44 kilometers with an elevation gain of 3,050 meters and a negative altitude of 2,480 meters. Along the way, you’ll be greeted by the unobstructed vistas of the Libyan Sea to the south and a breathtaking “sea of peaks” to the north.
Adding to the allure is the initial ferry voyage to the starting point at Loutro – a journey that underscores the isolation of this small village, which remains disconnected from the outside world.
